For this project, I found by exploring news articles and reading the articles provided was a great way to decide what I was really interested in and what I really wanted to expand on. The forum discussions was one of the helpful things because not only did I get to write out my thoughts and ideas but also the people's comments helped push me to think past what I had written.
I created my own mind mapping when I was gathering my evidence and claims, and that was particularly helpful because I laid out the evidence and added claims to each one and afterwards, connected similar ideas or connected that ones that supported each other. I did find this project a little challenging because I was not used to this sort of writing/research. Probably because there was a lot of freedom in what I wanted to talk about.
The bulleted rough outline helped me organize my thoughts. I pointed out the themes and wrote out main questions, following the evidence for each article. That way, I always had to questions in mind and did not write down every quote that I found generally interesting. For a majority of the essay, I did horizontal analysis, which was something I rarely did but wanted to give a try because I found vertical analysis too straightforward, such as analyzing each article per paragraph. The questions that I wrote really helped out with the horizontal analyses.
For the Library workshop, I am currently looking at Technology and Immigration. I also want to look at Technology and Medicine, Technology and Body, Technology and Education, Technology and Art, and/or Technology and Music.
The key terms I would potentially search up would be:
- Music Production
- Immigration Technology
- Technology and Immigration
- Technology and Migration
- Immigration and STEM
- First generation Kids and Technology
I would like to get stronger at thinking more freely. I honestly feel like I have bee trained to write a very traditional essay. I personally thought the first project had the characteristics of a regular essay, but there was a different feeling to it, such as the freedom to include whatever helped the essay. I also want to get stronger at not summarizing and more analyzing.
